Pistons set to confirm move to Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Pistons NBA basketball franchise will announce later today (Tuesday) that it intends to move to Little Caesars Arena from the 2017-18 season, according to numerous reports.

The facility is currently under construction and has been lined up as the home arena of the Detroit Red Wings NHL ice hockey franchise.

The Pistons currently play at The Palace of Auburn Hills, which has been the team’s home since 1988.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations told the Associated Press news agency that the team has reached an agreement in principle with the city of Detroit and Olympia Entertainment for the Pistons to join the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

Representatives from the Pistons and Olympia Entertainment, which handles the Red Wings’ business operations, have been in negotiations for a number of weeks and official confirmation of a move downtown is expected at a news conference at 3pm local time (8pm GMT).

The 2016-17 season will mark the Red Wings’ last at Joe Louis Arena, its home since 1979, ahead of the move to Little Caesars Arena. Construction work on the $627m (£504m/€590m) project got underway in April 2015. The arena will have a capacity of 21,000.
