New Luxembourg stadium could be completed in 2019

Luxembourg's new €60m (£51.0m/$63.5m) national football stadium could open as soon as October 2019.

The ‘Lentile’ venue in the small European state’s capital city will have a capacity of 9,385 and is to be located in the Cloche d'Or district. The current national stadium, Stade Josy Barthel (pictured), can hold around 8,000 spectators.

The BENG-designed stadium, which will also host rugby matches, will include a roof over the spectator area, VIP areas, kiosks, a business club with kitchen, press rooms and television studio, changing rooms, rooms for police, fire and security and a multifunctional parking area.

The capital’s mayor said preparatory work on the site should begin in May 2017 and construction in September 2017.

According to Wort.lu, the new stadium, which is 70% funded by Luxembourg’s sports ministry, will feature a hybrid pitch combining natural grass and artificial turf, while a complex drainage system will ensure optimum quality in all weather.

“The stadium has all it needs to make double practice possible,” Luxembourg Rugby Federation president Steve Karier told Wort.lu.

“The new ground is built to the standards of Arsenal stadium and with respect to Twickenham stadium. It's close to the best you can get at this point.”
