Tasmanian councillor suggests renaming cricket ground after Trump

A local councillor in Westbury, Tasmania has proposed that the town name its cricket ground after US President-elect Donald Trump.

Local newspaper The Examiner reports that Councillor John Temple believes renaming Westbury Cricket Ground as Donald J Trump Park would serve as a tribute to a man he believes is “likely to be the greatest agent of change this century.”

Temple made the suggestion during a council meeting and said the proposal would be discussed in more detail before being formally addressed at the council’s next get-together.

“It is in our best interests to extend the hand of friendship to the new President of the United States, who is not a politician and will likely come at things from a different perspective,” Temple told the Guardian newspaper.

The suggestion was met with derision from some of Temple’s fellow councillors, with Bob Richardson seeking clarification over whether Trump had pledged to “make America great again” or “make America grate again”.

“The personal conversations I have had have all been positive,” Temple added. “I have seen things on Facebook calling me an idiot.”

Craig Perkins, Mayor of the Meander Valley Council area of Tasmania, issued a statement saying that the council “will not be considering a change of name of the cricket ground unless it is submitted as a notice of motion to a future council meeting by a councillor.”
