Stadio della Roma-Tor di Valle to regenerate local area, architect says

The urban planning architect behind the Stadio della Roma-Tor di Valle project believes the scheme will help regenerate the local area.

A new stadium for Italian Serie A football club AS Roma will serve as the centrepiece of a wide-ranging development project that also includes plans for a new training facility, as well as entertainment areas, bars and restaurants.

The development is due to take place in the south-west quadrant of Rome, and Lorenzo Busnengo, whose company, Busnengo Studio, is responsible for the urban planning for the stadium project, feels the scheme will breathe new life into the surrounding area.

“Stadio della Roma will surely be a positive thing for the whole area,” Busnengo said in an interview posted on the project’s website. “The area – which is urbanised but currently abandoned – will undergo a massive recovery process.”

He added: “Other than the technical, urban and building characteristics of the project, there’s a big focus on the social implications of this project, which means that the project will have a positive impact on the community, starting with the services provided, the environmental aspect, including security, which is a hot topic in major cities today.”

The project is still awaiting official approval from the local council. If given the green light, construction work would begin next year, with Roma hoping to move in to the ground in time for the 2019-20 Serie A season.
