Work to prepare the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia, for the country’s hosting of the 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup has finished on time, according to city officials.

The facility, which was the centrepiece for the Sochi 2014 winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, required extensive development work to make it suitable to host football matches.

According to ESPN, the project included the removal of a temporary roof, as well as increasing its capacity from 40,000 to 47,700.

The stadium is one of four venues across the country that will host matches during the national football team event and will be used during the Fifa 2018 World Cup.
