Stadio della Roma to lead the way in environmental sustainability, says architect

One of the architects behind the proposed Stadio della Roma-Tor di Valle project in the Italian capital believes the complex will serve as a beacon of environmental sustainability.

A state-of-the-art, 52,500-capacity stadium for Serie A football club AS Roma will serve as the centrepiece of a wide-ranging development project that also includes plans for a new training complex, entertainment areas, bars and restaurants.

As part of the plans, 10,000 new trees will be planted on the site, while 62 hectares of land surrounding the stadium will be converted into public parks.

Andreas Kipar, founding partner of the LAND architectural firm, feels the complex will serve as an example of environmental sustainability.

“Nowadays green spaces have an integral role in a modern city,” Kipar said. “I believe we have interpreted what we found in Tor di Valle with respect. It is a tribute to the Roman countryside… showing great respect for all Roman citizens."

He added: “The Tor di Valle project, in its landscape renderings, has been designed so that half of the entire area will be new landscapes. The green area will be divided into five different ‘lungs’. Five lungs in which the large seven-hectare urban park will be the greatest challenge of all, as it’s placed in the heart of the area, because it’s inside.

“The urban park offers the chance for leisure activities, sports activities, free time in general, and also has a small amphitheatre. It offers constant links to the services made available in the Convivium and Business Park."

The project is still awaiting official approval from the local council. If given the green light, construction work would begin next year, with Roma hoping to move in to the ground in time for the 2019-20 Serie A season.
