Roma chief insists barrier issue will be tackled

Umberto Gandini, the chief executive of Italian Serie A football club AS Roma, has insisted that fixing the barrier issue at the Stadio Olimpico is “very important to us”.

Gandini’s comments come before a reported boycott by the Curva Sud Ultras – the club’s most vociferous supporters – for this Sunday’s derby match against Lazio.

The fans are protesting at barriers that were introduced at the start of the 2015-16 season by the local authorities in order to carve up their seating area.

“All we can do is keep raising the issue with the authorities as to the need to consider the supporters peacefully returning to the stadium,” Gandini told the club’s official website.

“This matter is on the agenda and it's one that is very important to us. We're not having the experience we're used to at the Stadio Olimpico, whereas we have a huge turnout on the road.

“The club supports this request, which comes directly from the players who would like to play in a setting they deserve.”

Roma shares the Stadio Olimpico with Lazio.
