Amsterdam ArenA to benefit from Nissan back-up power

Japanese automotive manufacturer Nissan is to utilise second-life Nissan LEAF batteries to provide back-up power to Amsterdam ArenA, home of Eredivisie football club Ajax.

The arrangement forms part of a 10-year partnership between the two parties, power management firm Eaton and technology company The Moblity House.

The xStorage Buildings system in place at the venue will comprise a total of 280 batteries, which were previously used in Nissan LEAF electric vehicles, and offer four Megawatts of power and four Megawatts of storage capacity. The system will also enable Amsterdam ArenA to power the surrounding neighbourhood when necessary and protect the grid.

The Moblity House will operate the xStorage Buildings system integrated at the Amsterdam ArenA, performing various energy services to help strengthen local grid stability.

“Not only will xStorage Buildings provide vital back-up power to the ArenA but it will also help to stabilise the national grid in the Netherlands at times of high-energy demand,” Nissan’s chairman in Europe, Paul Willcox, said.

Henk Markerink, chief executive of the Amsterdam ArenA, added: “We’re talking about a huge advantage in sustainability. Soon we will be able to store generated energy from our solar panels and windmills and put it to use when we need it.

“A great innovation – in the future the Amsterdam ArenA will be the first stadium in the world that won’t be using fossil fuels anymore.”
