Tokyo 2020 begins work on new National Stadium

Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games have confirmed that construction work has begun on the new National Stadium that will serve as the centrepiece for the Japanese capital’s hosting of both events.

Although the groundbreaking ceremony will not take place until December 11, the Kyodo news agency said that the building certification application has now been filed with the Tokyo metropolitan government. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2019.

The Tokyo 2020 team had hoped to begin work in October of last year, but these original plans were scrapped due to ballooning cost estimates for the design.

The stadium will now be based on a design by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who worked in partnership with construction giant Taisei Corp. and building planner Azusa Sekkei Co.
