York Community Stadium loses main contractor

ISG, the lead building contractor for the proposed York Community Stadium, has withdrawn from the project, citing rising costs and ongoing delays.

Plans for the 8,000-capacity stadium were first put forward in 2009 and work was scheduled to begin in April of next year.

However, the project has faced a host of delays, with the latest coming in October when it was announced that a judicial review over plans for a cinema element of the project will not be heard until next year.

ISG said in a statement it had considered “every opportunity to bring the scheme to site”, but with the judicial review delaying matters and cost rising, it had been “unable to reach a consensus for the next phase of the project”.

According to the BBC, the city council said that it remains “fully committed” to the scheme, adding: “We have been clear to the consortium for some time that any further costs on the project can only be accepted once demonstrated that it provides best value in the current market place.”

Should the project go ahead, the stadium will become the new home of English fifth-tier Conference Premier football club York City and League 1 third-tier rugby league side York City Knights. Both clubs currently play at Bootham Crescent, which has a capacity of 8,200, including 3,400 seats.
