New 30,000-capacity Sydney stadium to boast steepest stands in Australia

The New South Wales Government has today (Thursday) unveiled the winning design for a new state-of-the-art, 30,000-capacity stadium in Sydney.

Parramatta Stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2019, will serve as the home of AFL Aussie rules team the Parramatta Eels and A-League football club the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Construction firm Lendlease will be responsible for the development of the stadium, which is set to create more than 1,200 jobs in Western Sydney. Construction will begin in early 2017, with the stadium to reportedly cost about Aus$300m (£178m/€209m/$225m).

The stadium will boast the steepest stands of any venue in Australia and will also provide pedestrian and public transport links, as well as improved access to the nearby Parramatta Park.

Although specific details of the stadium’s interior are yet to be released, Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas is keen for the facility to include safe-standing areas.

“We don’t say it’s a Western Sydney Wanderers ground,” Tsatsimas said. “It’s a stadium for the people of Western Sydney but the Western Sydney Wanderers are prime tenants and we want to be represented at the ground.

“We’re still waiting on the specifics of that stadium and the plan as such but we’ve had some great input into the design of the stadium and we will wait to see what elements are integrated into that plan. Predominately, one prime consideration for us is the safe standing we will hope that it will be in there but we will wait to see the specifics of that.”

Work to demolish the existing Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta will begin in the New Year.
