India edges closer to world’s biggest cricket stadium

Plans to turn the Motera Stadium in India into the world’s largest cricket venue have progressed after the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) handed a construction contract to Larsen & Turbo (L&T).

The Times of India newspaper reports that GCA vice-president Parimal Nathwani has passed on a letter of acceptance to L&T, with expansion work scheduled for completion within the next two years.

The Ahmedabad venue – officially the Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium – was a regular host of Test and one day games before being demolished ahead of its redevelopment.

The stadium will more than double in capacity, increasing from 50,000 seats to 110,000, surpassing the current largest cricket venue in the world, Melbourne Cricket Ground, which can seat 100,024 people.

Other work will include developments to the entrances and exits at the venue, as well as improved eateries, fan zones, bathrooms, VIP boxes and parking facilities.

In a press release, the GCA said: “The ground is ready to be handed over to the construction company. The new stadium, when completed, will be the largest cricket stadium in the world. It will be made to meet all the latest international standards.”
