LAFC hits stadium milestone as first concrete poured

Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) has poured the first of its concrete slabs at Banc of California Stadium.

Yesterday’s (Thursday’s) milestone followed several weeks of demolition and excavation work.

Over 130 concrete trucks were used to pour the initial 1,300 cubic yards of concrete needed to form the foundation of the stadium, which will seat 22,000 people.

The $350m (£278m/€330m) facility is due to open in 2018, the year LAFC will join the top-tier MLS.

“This is a major milestone for our team, fans and city,” LAFC president and co-owner Tom Penn said. “This concrete pour is not only an important step towards the completion of the stadium, but also a significant accomplishment for the community that has helped make this dream possible.”

In keeping with LAFC’s commitment to involve fans in the stadium development process, two members of the LAFC Originals supporters’ club were selected to assist with the concrete pour.

LAFC was formed in October 2014 and lists actor Will Ferrell and former NBA basketball star Magic Johnson among its financial backers.
