Headingley £39m redevelopment project edges closer

A proposed £39m (€46.3m/$48.2m) revamp of Headingley cricket and rugby stadium in Leeds has moved a step closer after parties behind the project were able to clear a potential obstacle.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club and rugby league club Leeds Rhinos, two of the teams that play at the venue, had proposed selling land for housing development in order to help fund work.

The two clubs have now dropped the proposal after what the BBC described as “complex planning matters” delayed the renovation scheme.

However, Gary Hetherington, chief executive of Leeds Rhinos, said dropping the land sale means new funds now need to be found, with both sports teams and Leeds City Council exploring “all options”.

The project, which is due to commence in January, includes a new south stand on the rugby ground, as well as a new joint stand that overlooks the rugby pitch and cricket ground.

The development remains subject to approval, with Leeds City Council set to consider the stadium project application at a meeting on January 12.
