Fiorentina submit plans for new stadium

Italian Serie A football club Fiorentina has put forward a proposal to construct a new 40,000-seater stadium, in the hope of playing matches at the venue by 2021.

Fiorentina have played at the 43,000-capacity Stadio Artemio Franchi since 1931.

According to various sources in the Italian media, plans have been submitted to the Florence city council for consideration. The club first announced plans to build a new stadium in 2012.

However, the plans could face an early stumbling block, as should the proposed venue be given the go-ahead, the city’s Mercafir fruit market would need to be entirely relocated, which could cause issues amongst local residents.

Lorenzo Perra, head of urban planning, told Lady Radio: “Now begins the process of analysing the documentation. Let’s say that 2017 could be the year where the bureaucratic process is concluded, 2018 the announcement and construction could start in 2019.

“I’d say that Fiorentina’s first match in a new stadium could be expected in 2021.”
