Atlanta United to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium in July

Officials at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, have confirmed that the facility will be officially opened by new Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise Atlanta United.

The team will be one of two permanent residents at the 75,000-capacity stadium, along with NFL American football outfit the Atlanta Falcons.

However, United will have the honour of hosting the first-ever sporting event at the facility by playing a home match on July 30 this year. The game will kick-start a series of opening events at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with United set to play two more home games in August.

The Falcons will take to the field for the first time at the facility in August, with two pre-season games scheduled.

Steve Cannon, chief executive of AMB Group, the parent company of both teams, said: “The opening five weeks are going to showcase the thought, design and effort that went into this unique building in every configuration.

“Football fans, soccer supporters and concert-goers are going to be treated to a spectacular experience for those events.

“We also expect to have a number of more intimate opportunities to experience the stadium for seat licence owners, founding members and stadium partners during this timeframe.”

It was recently announced that the stadium will house the world’s largest LED display screen.
