SGSA to advise on development at Casement Park

The Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) has been appointed to advise on redevelopment plans at Belfast’s Casement Park.

According to newspaper The Irish News, the SGSA has been present at various meetings staged by the Safety Technical Group (STG) as an advisory body on the stadium design.

The SGSA, an organisation that oversees safety at football stadiums in England and Wales and also advises on other sports in the UK and around the world, had not been consulted on the design for the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium, but will now play a role in the project.

Writing in an email about the SGSA, an official said that the organisation would provide the STG with the “technical expertise” to ensure the project is a success.

Casement Park is the principal GAA stadium in Belfast and is home to the Antrim football and hurling teams. It has been included as part of Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup bid.

Redevelopment plans, estimated at £76m ($92.5m/€87.0m), would see Casement Park’s capacity rise from 32,600 to 34,500. The project, scheduled to be completed by 2019, is to include new coach travel and park and ride facilities.
