Nene Park faces demolition

Nene Park, the former home of English football clubs Rushden and Diamonds and Kettering Town, could be set for demolition after owners filed an application to pull the facility down.

The Irthlingborough venue has not hosted a professional game since November 2012, when Kettering departed. Irthlingborough Diamonds played at the site since its opening in 1969 and continued to do so following the merger with Rushden Town, through to when the club went out of business in 2011.

In the application, the owners said that the stadium is in a “dangerous condition”, citing the facility as a “major fire risk”. East Northants Council will now consider the application before giving the go-ahead for demolition.

“We have received the prior notification application from the owners of Nene Park for the demolition of the stadium,” a council spokesperson said, according to the Northants Telegraph newspaper.

“East Northamptonshire Council does not own the land or the stadium known as Nene Park. The application cannot be called in to committee.”
