Japanese ballpark strikes naming-rights deal with MetLife

Seibu Stadium, home of Japanese Professional Baseball League club the Seibu Lions, is to undergo a name change after an agreement was reached with insurance company MetLife.

The Lions have agreed a five-year deal with MetLife to change the ballpark’s name to the MetLife Dome from March 1. The deal will run until February 28, 2022.

It is not the first time the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000, has changed its name. The facility was known as the Seibu Prince Dome for the past two seasons and originally opened in 1979 as the Seibu Lions Stadium.

Sachin Shah, MetLife Japan’s representative statutory executive officer, chairman and president, said: “As one of the largest foreign insurers in Japan, we wanted to partner with a leading venue that extends the reach of our brand to new levels.

“This is a great opportunity to integrate our efforts in helping the general public lead healthier and more satisfying lives with a premier sports and entertainment venue. I am confident this partnership will further strengthen our brand.”
