St Louis plans for MLS stadium ‘on life support’

Plans to build a new Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium in the city of St. Louis, Missouri, have suffered yet another blow after a fresh proposal to use $60m (€56.2m/£48.7m) of public money to support the project was met with a less-than-positive response.

Last week, the stadium plans looked dead after an initial bill to use $80m of public funds for the project failed to get off the ground. However, a new proposal put forward this week set out plans to use less money, and hopes were raised that the project would get the go-ahead.

The St. Louis Ways and Means Committee met yesterday (Thursday) to discuss the fresh proposal, but, despite optimism from bill sponsor Alderman Christine Ingrassia, the new plan led to a series of heated exchanges, with no conclusion being reached.

Although another hearing is set for Monday, Committee chairman Stephen Conway said that the bill is now “on life support”, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

If the bill is to make the April 4 ballot, it must pass the full Board of Aldermen by Tuesday next week.
