St. Louis’ MLS stadium bid could be back on track

Plans to build a new Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium in St. Louis, Missouri could be back on the agenda after the city’s Ways and Means Committee voted in favour of advancing a bill to ask voters to approve $60m (£47.8m/€56m) in funding for the project.

The committee had initially voted against advancing the bill before reconvening and passing a revised approval by a 5-4 majority. The Associated Press news agency reports that the key revision in the fresh proposal imposes an “amusement tax” on ticket sales that would generate up to $12m for the city over the course of 30 years.

The AP’s report added that the full Board of Aldermen is expected to vote next week on whether or not the measure should be placed on the April ballot.

Committee chairman Stephen Conway had previously said that the bill was “on life support” but the latest news will offer hope to the SC STL group, which is leading the bid to form an MLS franchise in St. Louis.

SC STL last year proposed a 22,000-capacity stadium. The group had initially proposed that $80m in public funding be used to aid the $200m project but this failed to receive the necessary backing before this week’s developments.
