New push by SCG Trust for 40,000-seat stadium at Moore Park

A new stadium at Moore Park is back on the table in the Australian city of Sydney, with a modified 40,000-seat proposal.

Last year, after the state government ruled in favour of providing the majority of its Aus$1.6bn (£1bn/€1.1bn/$1.2bn) stadia investment into ANZ Stadium, the SCG Trust lost hope of its 60,000-seat venue at Moore Park.

During the past few months, the new plan to knock down and rebuild on the existing Allianz Stadium site has gathered momentum, with all key stakeholders set to back the proposal put forward by the SCG Trust, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

Suspecting they were “cheated” last year, the Roosters, Waratahs and Sydney FC held Sports Minister Stuart Ayres accountable after they were given guarantees that a new stadium would be built on a different site to their current home, the report added.

With the ANZ Stadium as a funding priority, it would leave about $400-$500m to spend on the Allianz Stadium and, rather than simply upgrading the dated venue, the SCG Trust plans to build a new stadium on the existing site.
