University of Florida’s 3D animation projection receives rave reviews

The University of Florida is considering investing in up to $350,000 (€327,000/$379,000) in new technology after receiving positive feedback following an innovative 3D animated pre-game projection show on its basketball court on Saturday.

Before the Gators’ win against the Kentucky Wildcats, the UF Athletic Association gave a debut to the technology, which was hired for $20,000.

The animated show made it appear that the court had opened up to an overhead view of alligators, complemented by the ‘Jaws’ theme tune.

Four rented projectors were used during the display. The university’s athletic department is weighing up whether to purchase the equipment so it can be used for a range of other arenas, including those for volleyball and gymnastics events.

Alicia Longworth, the assistant athletics director of marketing and promotions for the University Athletic Association, told the Alligator.org website: “As a staff, we continue to try to find the next innovative idea that we can help make the fan experience great.”

Longworth worked with the creative team from ON Event Services to arrange the projection.
