Wireless providers detail record in-stadium data use at Super Bowl

A group of US wireless providers have revealed record in-stadium data usage at this year’s Super Bowl, the end-of-season showpiece event of the NFL American football league.

Published in the Houston Chronicle, the reports from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile come after the New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Sunday.

AT&T said that fans at the venue used more than 9.8 terabytes of data, a new mobile data record for any championship sporting event of American football game. The figure represents an increase of 88 per cent on last year’s Super Bowl.

Elsewhere, Sprint said its customers used almost five terabytes of data inside the NRG Stadium, up more than threefold on last year’s event, while Verizon users got through 11 terabytes of data, 57 per cent more than at the 2016 Super Bowl.

T-Mobile said customers used nearly twice as much data than last year, with the 2016 total surpassed by half-time of this year’s game.
