Celta Vigo coach calls on Mayor to ensure stadium safety

Repairs have started on Celta Vigo’s weather-damaged Balaidos stadium after the Spanish LaLiga football club’s coach, Eduardo Berizzo, urged Mayor Abel Caballero to ensure that the crucial work is done to guarantee the venue’s safety.

Strong winds and heavy rain damaged part of the roof at the ground, forcing Caballero to call off Sunday’s game against league leader Real Madrid, according to ESPN FC.

Work on the stadium began earlier this week ahead of the Europa League home game against Shakhtar Donetsk on February 16.

Berizzo said that the stadium, which opened in 1928 and is owned by the town hall, needs a full inspection regardless.

“We have to play in a stadium that is safe and comfortable for the fans, who are the ones that sustain this sport we all love,” Berizzo said.

The 89-year-old Balaidos stadium is undergoing a renovation that will give it a 31,000 capacity, with completion planned for late 2017.
