ANZ Stadium ready to host A-League derby after rock concerts

Sydney’s ANZ Stadium will be ready to stage this Saturday’s A-League football match, just a week after it hosted two Guns N’ Roses concerts.

There had been concerns that the derby match between Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC would suffer as a result of the wear and tear ANZ Stadium’s pitch endured during the two shows.

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reports that turf at one end of the 83,500-seat stadium will be replaced, but otherwise the ground is in good condition.

“The pitch was well protected during the concerts and available to our grounds team on Sunday to commence preparation for the derby,” ANZ Stadium general manager Greg Sleigh said. “We’re confident it will be in good shape for Saturday.”

Almost 62,000 fans turned up to watch the Sydney derby on the opening weekend of the season, but attendance for this weekend’s fixture is not expected to surpass 50,000.

Sleigh added: “Can it get bigger? Absolutely. Wanderers v Sydney FC has captured the imagination of football fans everywhere. This year’s attendance will reach about 150,000 across three matches, delivering the A-League an event on a scale equivalent to anything in Europe, reaching 50,000-plus more sports lovers than ever before.”
