Skanska to lead Helsinki Olympic Stadium renovation project

Multinational construction firm Skanska has landed a contract to lead the reconstruction of Helsinki’s pre-War Olympic Stadium.

According to KHL.com, the initiative will include renovation of the seating areas, the construction of roofs to cover all stands and terraces, as well as renovation of the venue’s running track.

In addition, new facilities for sports, gyms and maintenance will be built under the stadium, while the restaurant and toilet facilities will be increased.

Skanska’s contract is worth $168.4m (€158m/£134.4m).

The Olympic Stadium temporarily closed last year ahead of work beginning. The project is due to begin in the first quarter of this year, and scheduled for completion by 2019.

The stadium was opened in 1938 and hosted the 1952 Olympic Games as well as staging the IAAF World Athletics Championships in 1983 and 2005.
