Napoli president remains keen on 20,000-seat stadium

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has reiterated his desire to build a new, much smaller stadium for the Italian Serie A football club.

De Laurentiis first stated his desire to build a 20,000-capacity stadium back in September, when he said it was a “pain” to go the club’s current ground, Stadio San Paolo.

The San Paolo has a capacity of around 60,000 but the club struggles to fill the venue and last season averaged an attendance of around 39,000 in the league.

Reports have suggested that the San Paolo will be renovated but De Laurentiis remains keen on building a new stadium from scratch.

“It’s not tiny, 20,000 seats, because even then you have to think that you’re talking about a private club, a private circle,” De Laurentiis said, according to FourFourTwo magazine. “If you sign up at a tennis club they want to know what you do, who you are.

“Then with 20,000 seats we could also give away 5,000 seats to less well-off, those who are studying, who will go to university.”
