Qatar-Turkey joint venture named as main contractor for World Cup stadium

Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, which is responsible for delivering the stadia and infrastructure for football’s Fifa World Cup in 2022, has announced Qatari construction firm AlJaber Engineer and Turkish company Tekfen Construction as the main contractors for a new venue in the Al Thumama district.

The two firms will oversee the construction of the 40,000-seat facility in Doha, which becomes the seventh World Cup venue to be awarded a main construction contract.

The venue, which is not far from Doha’s Hamad International Airport, is scheduled for completion by 2020 and will host World Cup matches up to the quarter-final stage.

The area in which the stadium is being built already comprises four outdoor training pitches and office facilities used by the Qatar Football Association Technical Committee.

“The stadium in Al Thumama is located in one of the most rapidly developing areas of Doha,” Hassan Al Thawadi, secretary general of the Supreme Committee, said. “Once ready, the stadium and its surrounding precinct will not only become one of the capital’s central sporting arenas, but will also serve the local community as a central community destination.

“I am confident that the signing of Al Jaber Engineering and Tekfen Construction, one of the leading construction companies in Turkey, will deliver an outstanding, legacy-oriented stadium for a historic tournament.”

In line with the Supreme Committee’s stadium legacy model, the venue will have a reduced capacity of 20,000 following the conclusion of the World Cup.

Construction on the site began in mid-2016 and the stadium design will be revealed later this year.
