Power back on again at Maracana

Power has been restored to the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after almost a month.

Last month, power was switched off at the iconic stadium, which served as a host venue during football’s Fifa World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio, amid a dispute over who should foot a $1m (£798,000/€945,000) electricity bill.

Electric utility firm Light cut off the power late last month and the company said the blackout would continue until someone pays the bill.

The blackout ceased yesterday (Thursday) after Light confirmed that the stadium’s managers had agreed to pay a R$1.3m fee to cover the months of November, December and January.

The Reuters news agency reports that Light is still awaiting a R$1.8m fee from the Rio 2016 organising committee, which managed the stadium during the Games.

According to Reuters, Light said it “continues to negotiate with the Rio 2016 organising committee for the payment of electricity bills during the period in which the stadium was used for the Games”.
