California stadium to stage rugby sevens showpiece

Banc of California Stadium, the facility that will host Los Angeles FC Major League Soccer games from next year, will become the permanent home of the Grand Prix Rugby $1m Champion Sevens series.

The $250m stadium, which is currently under construction, will host what LAFC is describing as “the world’s richest rugby sevens championship in history”.

Sevens joined the programme for the Olympics for Rio 2016 and Los Angeles is up against Paris in the race to host the 2024 Games.

The seven-year deal was agreed between LAFC, Grand Prix Network and USA Rugby.

The 22,000-seat venue is expected to bring more than $350m in private investment to the south Los Angeles area.

GPN’s executive vice-president, Kevin Wynne, who negotiated the partnership, said: “LAFC had the vision and commitment to invest in a state-of-the art stadium that will quickly become Major League Soccer’s signature venue and their innovative approach to giving their fans an amazing game day experience make them the perfect partner.

“We were delighted LAFC enthusiastically embraced a long-term partnership, and we can’t wait for rugby fans from around the world to descend on Los Angeles to witness the richest Champions Sevens tournament ever in the ultra-modern Banc of California Stadium.”
