Anthony Joshua to have stadium named after him in Nigeria

Anthony Joshua is set to have a stadium and a street named after him in Ogun, the Nigerian state from which his parents came from.

The 27-year-old defeated Wladimir Klitschko in the 11th round of the pair’s heavyweight world championship boxing match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. The fight, which attracted more than 90,000 fans and was watched by millions around the world, was billed as one of the biggest in British boxing history.

Joshua’s win will be honoured by the Ogun State government with the renaming of the 20,000-capacity Sagamu International Stadium to Anthony Joshua Stadium, while the popular Cinema Street will be renamed Anthony Joshua Street. Joshua’s family owns a large proportion of the street’s land and property.

The motion in the state legislature for these name changes will be brought forward by the majority leader of the State House of Assembly in Ogun, Yinka Mafe.

“We are proud of what he has achieved as a son of Sagamu, and we will be happy to do our own little bit to show our appreciation and support for him,” Mafe said, according to ESPN.
