Italian Serie A football club Empoli has announced plans to revamp its Stadio Carlo Castellani home stadium ahead of the team’s centenary celebrations in 2020.
The FootballItalia.com website reports that the club is hoping to reconstruct the Stadio Carlo Castellani by moving stands closer to the field of play and removing the athletics track that currently resides in the stadium.
Should the plans gain approval, the capacity of the stadium would increase by approximately 6,000 seats to 20,266, with 20 sky boxes.
Speaking about the proposed initiative, club president Fabrizio Corsi said: “Unlike various other projects seen around, ours is not an attempt at property speculation. There will be no construction other than the stadium.”
The club also said the project would include investment in a new athletics track that would be placed in another area of the Italian city.
Empoli’s average attendance during 2016-17 is just 9,474, ranging between 15,500 for the visit of Juventus and 7,100 for the home game against Chievo Verona. The club currently sits one place above the relegation zone in the Serie A table.
