Manchester United lift Europa League at Friends Arena

Manchester United fans last night converged on Stockholm’s Friends Arena to witness their side lift the Europa League trophy with a 2-0 win over Dutch side Ajax on a poignant night for supporters of the English Premier League club.

The game took place less than 48 hours after a bomb attack at Manchester Arena killed 22 people and left many others injured. The attack took place following an Ariana Grande pop concert.

Both sets of supporters observed an impromptu minute’s silence before the game kicked off. Stadium staff then tried to initiate an official minute’s silence, at which point United fans began to chant the name of their home city as a tribute to the victims.

United won the game with goals in either half from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

United’s Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, currently out injured, posted a video on his Instagram page prior to kick-off with the caption ‘Welcome to the Zlatan Arena’.

Ibrahimovic scored all four goals as Sweden christened the stadium with a 4-2 victory over England on November 14, 2012. His fourth goal in that game – a stunning overhead kick from 30 yards out – is regarded as one of the greatest goals of recent times.
