Steve Brown has been appointed as the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) new chief executive.
Brown took up the role at the governing body of English rugby union on Monday, having previously served as the organisation’s chief officer of business operations.
Brown was responsible for Twickenham Stadium (pictured) in this role, as well as the RFU’s technology, finance, human resources, legal and governance, IPF, international relations and public affairs.
Brown replaces Ian Ritchie as chief executive of the body. Ritchie announced earlier this year that he would be retiring from his role at the end of the summer.
The RFU concluded its selection process for Ritchie’s replacement on August 31 before Brown’s appointment was approved by the body’s board.
Brown joined the RFU as chief financial officer in June 2011. Other previous roles include the managing director of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, a tournament which resulted in the RFU’s highest ever annual turnover and record investment in rugby.
RFU chairman Andy Cosslett said: “Over the last six years, Steve has shown us all exactly what he can deliver.
“He has undertaken a series of important strategic and operational roles for the RFU and I’m delighted to appoint him as CEO.
“His passion for rugby, and his commitment to rugby’s values are obvious to everyone who has worked with him, and he will lead a strong executive team who are committed to making rugby in England the best in the world.”
Brown added: “This is the job of a lifetime for me. I’m thrilled to be given this opportunity to lead a sport I love, in an organisation I have been proud to work for over the last six years, and I look forward to leading the team as we work to grow the game at every level. ”
