Work concludes on Pyeongchang Olympic stadium

Work on a temporary stadium in Pyeongchang has been completed ahead of the Korean city’s staging of the winter Olympic Games next year.

The 35,000-seat venue is due to stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games, which run from February 9-25.

The stadium will be demolished following the conclusion of the Games and turned into a museum and leisure facilities.

Construction of the venue began in 2015 and the stadium has proved controversial, with some having proposed hosting the opening and closing ceremonies at other arenas in nearby cities. As the Associated Press news agency notes, however, Pyeongchang residents opposed such an approach and the venue was eventually built in the city.

Freezing weather conditions in February could also lead to problems at the outdoor stadium, which is situated in a mountainous area of Pyeongchang.
