Al Ahly president unveils stadium plans

The president of Egyptian Premier League football club Al Ahly has revealed that the team has received the support of investors for its new stadium construction project.

Mahmoud El-Khatib also announced on Sunday that he would soon unveil a surprise for the club’s fans and members.

The club have announced that the stadium will have 60,000 seats, which will make it the third largest stadium in Egypt after Borg El-Arab with an 86,000 capacity and the 74,100-seat Cairo International Stadium.

Design firm Populous will take the lead on Al Ahly’s project, which is the same architecture company that designed Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and London’s Wembley Stadium.

“I am proud to announce the project of the century and it’s building Al Ahly stadium to be among the top 10 stadiums in the world if not the best,” El-Khatib said, according to the Kingfut website. “It was a beautiful dream and working on it well is what makes you achieve it.”

Al Ahly has played at a different stadium each season in recent years, with home venues including the Cairo International Stadium, Borg El-Arab, Petrosport and Al-Salam.
