Beijing 2022 starts work on first Olympic Village

Officials from the local organising committee for the 2022 winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, China, have confirmed that work has begun on one of the three Olympic Villages that will feature at the sporting spectacle.

The Beijing-based facility will have a total floor space of 200,000sq m and serve as the home of athletes taking part in ice sports at the Games.

State-owned Beijing Investment Group, the main investor, builder and operator of the Beijing Olympic Village, said plans are in place to transform the facility into public housing once the Games have finished.

Speaking to the Xinhua news agency, officials have pledged that the facility will be “high-quality” and “environmentally friendly”, as well as being suitable for both athletes and local residents who will move in after the Games.

The Beijing Olympic Village will be accompanied by sister sites in both Zanqing and Zhangjiakou, with both Olympic and Paralympic events due to be staged at various sites around the country.

Beijing’s winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place from February 4-20. This year’s edition of the Games will run from February 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
