Carillion owed for Qatar 2022 stadia

Troubled construction group Carillion is reportedly owed around £200m (€225.3m/$275.6m) for work carried out on stadia for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

The firm went into liquidation on Monday, owing almost £3bn to various parties after a number of contracts went sour, including work in Qatar, according to the Thisismoney.co.uk website.

Along with joint venture partner Qatar Building Company, Carillion was awarded a contract worth £493m to work on the redevelopment of centre of Qatari capital Doha in preparation the 2022 national football team tournament.

However, reports in October said that Carillion had not been paid for almost one year’s work and developer Msheireb Properties was withholding funds over a dispute as to how much money was owed by both sides.

Thisismoney.co.uk said Carillion had been working to secure payment to help stave off the threat of liquidation but ultimately failed in its efforts.

As a result, this week’s collapse leaves up to 30,000 businesses facing losses that amount to £1bn, with small companies facing repayment of less than a penny for every pound.

In July of last year, Carillion announced it was to get out of work in the Middle East, writing down £470m on exiting the region as well the Canadian market. The company also opted to write down £375m on three major public/private contracts in the UK.
