Wanda Metropolitano to stage Copa del Rey final

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced that the Wanda Metropolitano, the new home stadium of LaLiga club Atletico Madrid, will host the final of this season’s Copa del Rey.

The final of the annual knockout tournament has been staged at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico’s previous home, for the past two seasons, and the club has retained hosting rights for this year’s event.

The final of the 2017-18 Copa del Rey will see Barcelona and Sevilla face off, with the date set for Saturday, April 21.

The 67,829-seat Wanda Metropolitano staged its first competitive football game on September 16, and the Copa del Rey showpiece will be the first major final held there.

The stadium has also been granted hosting rights to the final of the 2018-19 Uefa Champions League. This year’s Copa del Rey final will be played earlier than usual due to the Fifa World Cup taking place in the summer.
