Swiss fans fail in Federer naming bid at Basel stadium

Swiss tennis fans have failed in an effort to rename the St. Jakobshalle stadium in Basel after national sporting hero Roger Federer.

Regarded by many as the best tennis play of all time, Federer has won no less than 97 titles during his professional playing career, including the Wimbledon singles tournament a record eight times and the US Open five times.

Federer’s followers in Switzerland had hoped to convince local councillors in the star’s home city of Basel to name the St. Jakobshalle venue after the player, but it appears that the effort has been shut down for the time being.

According to the Expess.co.uk website, councillor Thomas Gander said: “It can be a nice gesture later to put such a memorial on for Federer.

“But today it is still too early. And I’m almost sure he sees it that way.”
