Baystars to develop digital currency service for Yokohama Stadium

Japanese Professional Baseball (NPB) franchise the Yokohama DeNA Baystars will work with Giftee, the Tokyo-based digital currency venture, to develop a new digital currency service for the team’s home ballpark and its surrounding area, according to Japanese newspaper, Mainichi Shimbun.

Giftee specialises in creating regional currency into a digital currency solutions service, and together with the Baystars, they are aiming to develop a new, team-branded digital currency, provisionally named, the ‘BAYSTARS coin’.

According to the ITmedia News, the ‘BAYSTARS coin’ will be developed using Giftee’s regional digital currency service, Welcome!STAMP, which turns regional currency previously issued in paper notes or cards into digital currency, as the base. The various types of data and network owned by the Baystars will also be utilised.

On purchases, the users would show the ‘BAYSTARS coin’ to the shop, and the shop will provide an e-stamp indicating the payment is done to complete the transaction.

Under the proposed scheme, users would be able to purchase the ‘BAYSTARS coin’ using methods such as credit cards, and then register their interest on devices like smartphones to receive the service. The digital currency can be used at the team’s home ballpark, Yokohama Stadium, as well as participating restaurants, cafes, and other retail stores in the surrounding areas.

The scheme is designed to make gameday experiences more convenient since no cash is required and purchases can easily be made while watching the game. The Baystars also hope it will be a way for the team to contribute to the local economy and communities alike.
