MLS stadia to offer Clear biometric technology

Biometric identity specialist Clear has partnered with California-based Major League Soccer teams Los Angeles FC and the San Jose Earthquakes in a move designed to enhance the fan experience for the supporters of both clubs.

Fans of the LAFC and the Earthquakes will benefit from expedited entry into games by enrolling for free at any of Clear’s sports locations. The biometric technology will be unveiled at Banc of California Stadium – home of LAFC – and Avaya Stadium (pictured) – home of the Earthquakes – this week.

Lauren Stangel, vice-president of sports and entertainment at Clear, said: “We’re thrilled to expand further into soccer, and work hand-in-hand with these two innovative professional sports teams to provide fans the most enjoyable, hassle-free game day experience possible.

“Teams and fans are very excited about the new ways we’ll be expanding the platform to improve the fan experience, including biometric concessions and ticketing. There’s a lot more to come.”

The technology was initially rolled out in airports to create an easier and more secure experience and Clear is now expanding into sports venues. Clear now holds partnerships with 13 teams across MLS, Major League Baseball and the NBA basketball league.

The company is also developing further biometric-powered stadium experiences, including biometric ticketing and biometric payments for concessions and merchandise purchases.

Jared Shawlee, chief operating officer for the Earthquakes, added: “Our organisation is always pursuing new avenues to enhance the overall fan experience both inside and outside of Avaya Stadium. Adding Clear’s fast and free service will give our fans an easy pathway into the stadium on match day.”

Christian Lau, LAFC’s vice-president of information technology, said: “A creative, first-class and innovative guest experience at Banc of California Stadium is our top priority. Providing our fans and supporters with onsite Clear enrolment and verification lanes helps us accomplish that goal, and we look forward to working together on new, expanded biometric initiatives in the near future.”

Other venues that offer Clear technology include Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, Coors Field, Safeco Field, Marlins Park, AmericanAirlines Arena, AT&T Park, SunTrust Park, Oakland-Alameda Coliseum and Comerica Park.
