Supporters collect seats from old Atlético stadium

Fans of Atlético Madrid have been invited to collect their old seats from the club’s former stadium, the Vicente Calderon.

The Spanish LaLiga team moved into the state-of-the-art Wanda Metropolitano stadium at the start of the 2017-18 season. The Calderon had previously served as the club’s home since 1966 and season ticket holders have been offered the chance to retrieve their seats as a memento of the famous ground.

Fans began collecting their seats yesterday (Monday) and have until July 25 to do so, with the stadium set to be demolished next year. Fans will be able to retrieve the seats free of charge.

A club spokesman told Spanish broadcaster ABC: “About 22,000 seats will be delivered, of which 2,400 will be sent by courier service.”

Each fan will receive an authenticity certificate when collecting their seat.

Atlético’s first season at the Wanda Metropolitano saw the club finish second in LaLiga and win the UEFA Europa League. The 67,000-seat venue is due to host next season’s UEFA Champions League final.
