AFL to lead Millwall stadium expansion venture

English Championship football club Millwall has appointed AFL Architects to lead an expansion project for its stadium.

Millwall has played at its current stadium, The Den, since the 20,000-seat venue opened in 1993. Local newspaper Southwark News said the expansion project will seek to “build on the unique atmosphere of The Den” by adding substantial further spectator capacity, along with leisure and commercial facilities.

The London club and its consultant team, including AFL, will now seek to engage with Lewisham Council and other stakeholders, with public consultation for the design set to take place next month ahead of expected submission of a planning application by the end of the year.

Phil Osborne, director of AFL Architects, said: “This expansion has been a long time in the making for the club, so we are delighted that AFL have been trusted to work on what promises to be a challenging yet rewarding project.

“We look forward to unlocking the site and creating a development that will be sustainable far into the future.”
