Vodafone bolsters coverage at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão

Vodafone has completed a major project to boost the coverage and capacity of its mobile communications network at the Estádio do Dragão, home of Portuguese Primeira Liga football club FC Porto.

Through its Vodafone Portugal division, the telco installed 20 next-generation antennas at strategic points of the stadium and synchronised using Elastic Ran technology.

Vodafone said the improvements will increase the capacity of the mobile and data network tenfold, with the ability to now support up to 80,000 users.

In addition, Vodafone has added three LTE bands to boost bandwidth that will provide customers with peak speed of six times higher than previously. Users can now expect an aggregate speed of 5Gbps.

The Estádio do Dragão boasts a total capacity of 50,033, making it the third-largest football-specific stadium in Portugal.

Vodafone said in a statement: “Committed as it is to being present at the best moments in our customers’ lives and providing them with an excellent user experience responding to the most demanding communication requirements, Vodafone has put in place dedicated plans to increase the coverage and capacity of its mobile communications network whenever large crowds of people are expected at major events.”
