Dynamo Dresden postpones stadium name reveal

German 2. Bundesliga football club Dynamo Dresden has postponed revealing the new identity of its stadium following a process that let its fans determine the future moniker of the venue.

Dynamo was due to reveal the new name of DDV-Stadion ahead of Saturday’s game against Hamburger SV.

However, the match was postponed at short notice after local authorities in the state of Saxony decided they didn’t have enough resources to police both the game and demonstrations that were taking place in nearby Chemnitz.

The announcement has now been rescheduled for Dynamo’s next home match against SV Darmstadt on September 22.

Dynamo managing director Michael Born said: “It is very important to us in the interest of all concerned that the announcement of the new stadium name takes place in the context of a home game.”

The stadium was redeveloped to its current 32,000-seat guise in 2009 and fans have been granted the opportunity to revert its identity to two names it has used in the past. Fans could vote on a choice of Dynamo-Stadion or Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion at the www.unser-stadionname.de website.

Voting ran from August 23-31 with Dynamo stating 29,512 votes were cast by the deadline. The initiative has been made possible by Konsum Dresden and Drewag – Stadtwerke Dresden, which jointly hold the naming rights to the stadium through to June 30, 2021.

Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion was the name of the venue from 1951 to 1971, when it then changed to Dynamo-Stadion through to 1990.
