Five killed in Angola stadium tragedy

Five people have died following a stampede at a football stadium in Luanda, Angola on Saturday.

Seven people were also injured during the incident, which took place at the Estadio 11 de Novembre stadium.

The venue was hosting the first leg of the African Champions League quarter-final tie between Luanda’s Primeiro de Agosto and TP Mazembe of DR Congo.

In a statement reported by the BBC, Angola’s sports ministry said it regretted the deaths, adding that the seven injured people have been discharged from hospital. A commission of inquiry will be set up to investigate the disaster.

According to the BBC, the stampede occurred following the match after supporters realised that the gates to the stadium were shut. When the gates reopened, fans reportedly rushed out, with some having been trampled on by police horses.

The disaster comes after one person died earlier this month following a crush at a Madagascar stadium during the national team’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Senegal.
