Mayor sets 2023 as date for new Fiorentina stadium

Dario Nardella, the Mayor of Florence, has said that a new stadium for Serie A football club Fiorentina could be ready by 2023.

The club revealed details of a 40,000-seat stadium back in March 2017. At the time it was reported that the stadium, which would replace the Stadio Artemio Franchi as Fiorentina’s home, would cost around €420m (£365m/$481m).

Little progress has been made since then but Nardella has now revealed that recent talks between the city and the club have been productive. The stadium would be built on the Mercafir site in Florence.

“We have made a lot of progress … I believe that by 2023 the new stadium can be done,” Nardella said, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “At the end of 2018 Fiorentina presented a new documentation for the design. The technicians are viewing it and I am optimistic.

“I have spoken several times with the Della Valle family (which owns the club) and the Viola management and I have always had a strong will to realise the stadium plans.”

Fiorentina has played at the Stadio Artemio Franchi since it opened in 1931.
