England to hit the road again for Kosovo game

The English Football Association (FA) has confirmed that the men’s national team’s UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo later this year will be played away from Wembley, with a venue to be confirmed in due course.

The match will be played on September 10 and kick off at 7.45pm. The decision to play the fixture away from Wembley continues the FA’s drive to take the national team to other stadia across the country.

Prior to last summer’s World Cup, England defeated Costa Rica 2-0 at Leeds’ Elland Road stadium. After the tournament in Russia, where England reached the semi-finals, the team beat Switzerland 1-0 at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.

It remains to be seen whether Elland Road or the King Power Stadium will host the Kosovo match, or whether it will be another new venue.

Last year marked the first time that the men’s national team had played a home clash away from Wembley since the stadium was rebuilt in 2007. England played at a number of venues across England between 2001 and 2007 while Wembley was demolished and rebuilt.

England’s first match of the year will be against Czech Republic at Wembley on March 22. The FA confirmed today that the match, England’s first of the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, is almost sold out.
